The Halkidiki region is made up of three peninsulas that can be easily identified on the map in the north of Greece. Halkidiki is appreciated by tourists for its splendid transparent sea considered among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. In the three peninsulas you can find high-level tourist infrastructures, from extra-luxury hotels to traditional Greek houses and inexpensive camping sites. Thanks to its efficient road network it is possible to reach both its coastal landscape and the continental area. On site you can also appreciate archaeological sites and historical monuments. It is easily accessed from the city of Thessaloniki.
The Kassandra Peninsula
It is the closest promontory to the city of Thessaloniki, among the three peninsulas it is the most populated and is appreciated for its famous double characteristic that satisfies even the most demanding tourists. The tourist, in addition to immersing himself in a crystal clear sea and solitary bays with expanses of pine forests all around, also finds towns and places with all kinds of tourist services.
In the peninsula you can satisfy your desire for fun with pubs, cafes and discos of all kinds. And for lovers of good food there are traditional Greek taverns where you can enjoy a Mediterranean fish-based dinner with a good Greek wine. Sports enthusiasts can keep fit by choosing a wide range of water sports, such as scuba diving and wind surfing. In addition to the wonderful sea inside, the peninsula offers a countryside to be admired, where you can take long walks to discover a rural Greece.
The second promontory of Halkidiki is the Sitonia peninsula. Unlike the first finger, the peculiar feature of this peninsula is a beautiful natural landscape, excellent for tourists looking for a refuge from the hectic city life. On the beautiful rugged coast you can find small fishing villages, picturesque ports and deserted beaches. Tourists can stay on the peninsula in traditional apartments and campsites surrounded by wild nature. In addition to spartan campsites and accommodations, Sitonia is famous for the Porto Carras Hotel, the most luxurious and prestigious hotel in Greece, which had the honor of hosting the heads of state of European nations for the 2003 “European Congress of Thessaloniki”. The resort offers all kinds of services including an 18 hole golf course. For sports enthusiasts there are excellent tennis courts and a choice of a wide range of water sports.
The peninsula where Mount Athos stands is considered the most beautiful finger in all of Halkidiki.
The peninsula is populated exclusively by a community of Orthodox monks who live without the comforts of modern civilization. The majestic Mount Athos rises to 2033m above sea level, and is covered with virgin forests. The magnificent peninsula is populated exclusively by monks who have dedicated themselves to work and the Orthodox faith for hundreds of years. In the year 883 d.c. an independent republic dominated exclusively by monks and hermits was proclaimed. In 963 d.c. the first community of Orthodox monks was founded and a century later it was defined as a nation not accessible to non-religious in order not to violate the sanctity of the place. The prohibition continues today with the explicit prohibition of access for women, men can only enter the state with documentation issued by the government authorities. This isolation and devotion to the Orthodox religion have infused the Holy Mountain with a unique and mystical atmosphere. In 1400, Mount Athos was populated by 40,000 monks who lived in approximately 40 monasteries. The monasteries that have remained to this day are approximately 20 which currently host a population of monks of about 1700 monks. Inside the monasteries there are ecclesiastical treasures of an incalculable value, there are also icons and libraries with precious manuscripts. Due to restrictions, the only way to admire the magnificent monasteries is via a boat excursion that runs along the peninsula.
